Grow Space Featured on Wisconsin Public Radio

It's not every day a Kenosha farm gets featured on statewide public radio, so we're excited to share that Wisconsin Public Radio's "Wisconsin Today" recently spotlighted Grow Space Vertical Farms in a piece about the state of vertical farming in Wisconsin.

The story explores a question we hear a lot: if the big vertical farms failed, why should anyone believe in indoor farming? It's a fair question. Billions of dollars went into massive operations over the past decade, and many of them collapsed under the weight of energy costs, engineering problems, and business models that never quite worked.

But here's the thing: we're not trying to be those farms.

When Robert and his family launched Grow Space three years ago, the industry's biggest players were already struggling publicly. That timing turned out to be an advantage. We got to study exactly what went wrong and build differently from the start. We converted an old furniture store in Kenosha into a working farm, invested in modern LED technology that's dramatically more efficient than what was available even five years ago, and kept our focus narrow: leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens grown fresh for our local community.

UW-Madison greenhouse manager Johanna Oosterwyk, who was also interviewed for the piece, confirmed what we've seen firsthand. Leafy greens are the sweet spot for indoor farming. They grow fast, need less light than fruiting crops, and the freshness advantage over shipped grocery store greens is massive.

That freshness is really the heart of what we do. Our greens reach your table the same day they're harvested, which means they're roughly two weeks fresher than what you'd find at the store. And because we grow hydroponically rather than in soil, the roots stay intact, so your greens last longer in the fridge too. No pesticides, no herbicides, and we recycle over 90% of the water we use.

We're proud to be part of a growing community of small, sustainable farms proving that vertical farming works when it's done thoughtfully, locally, and with the right priorities.
