Why fiber deserves more attention than protein for most Americans

You might be wasting your time perfecting for protein.

Unless you are training hard or dieting, statistically you are eating enough protein without thinking about it.

Fiber is the opposite—90% of the American population doesn't get enough.

So eat your vegetables.

Most Americans Already Get Enough Protein

This NHANES analysis found that the percentage of the male population consuming less than the estimated average requirement for protein was "very low." Only 7.7% of adolescent females and 7.2-8.6% of older adult women reported consuming protein levels below their estimated average requirement. Average protein intake for adults aged 19-30 was approximately 91 grams per day.

The average American consumes around 16% of daily calories from protein, while the RDA (0.8 g/kg) would only require about 10% of calories. This means most Americans are consuming significantly more protein than the minimum requirement.

Athletes and Active People Do Need More Protein

"The current RDA for protein is 0.8 g/kg/day with multiple lines of evidence indicating this value is not an appropriate amount for a training athlete to meet their daily needs." Athletes require 1.4-2.0 g/kg/day or higher when restricting calories.

90%+ of Americans Don't Get Enough Fiber

"According to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, low intakes of dietary fiber are a public health concern for the general U.S. population." The average U.S. diet provides only 58% of the recommended fiber intake.

Agriculture Fairness Alliance. "An American Fiber Crisis." Available: https://www.agriculturefairnessalliance.org/news/an-american-fiber-crisis

"USDA experts report that 95% of Americans don't get enough fiber, and on average, American adults consume only half the fiber they need."

Summary

Nutrient % Meeting Requirements Status
Protein ~92-95% of adults Most get enough without trying
Fiber ~5-10% of adults Public health concern

The data is clear: unless you're an athlete or actively dieting, protein is likely not your nutritional bottleneck. Fiber almost certainly is.
